July 2007 Text Version
Day of Caring Of the more than 600 volunteers working to make a difference in their community that day, our Twin Lakes 4-H Camp welcomed 14 dedicated volunteers from Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) to help with our camp preparation efforts. Sailors and even the Command Master Chief himself, Kevin Monroe, worked side-by-side with us to help extend the opportunities that our wonderful 4-H volunteers (YOU) provide to our Kitsap County youth on a continual basis. From staining benches to cleaning roofs and gutters, NBK volunteers helped ready the grounds for this year’s Treasure Island 4-H camp to be held July 22-26. Although clearing vegetation, trails and debris may seem insignificant to many, Trustees Ruth and Chuck Pratt and Chuck Endicott found it vital to their work efforts in providing a safe, fun and prepared campground for the youth attending this year. In addition to the NBK crew’s help, the South Kitsap Musketeers 4-H Club, Heather & Toni Blanchard, Jim Cook from the Cat Nip 4-H Club, Pamela Lovitt and her children Anthony and Dallas Lovitt volunteered to participate in clean-up efforts at the 4-H camp’s work party held June 8th and 9th. The 4-H members stained benches, moved wood from archery field, cleaned vegetation and campsites. Kitsap County 4-H is grateful to ALL volunteers that give their time, efforts and expertise to our community youth. THANK YOU! In response to the national 4-H focus on SET, we can work to improve science literacy through 4-H programs and in turn increase the number of young adults pursuing careers in the science fields. 4-H can lead the way in preparing youth for the high tech and global world they live in. To develop our local plan for SET programming in Washington State University Extension 4-H, we need your input. A SET Committee made up of faculty, staff, volunteers and youth will explore the opportunities, resources and expectations that are outlined in the national SET framework. You are invited to join the SET Team. The committee will meet by teleconference in July to begin their work in addressing the SET challenges and opportunities.
