Greetings!
Change is in the air and I’m not talking just seasonal change. As of May 1, 2007 I took office as WSU – Kitsap County 4H Youth Development Educator. The last month has been exciting and eye-opening to the needs of our Kitsap County 4-H program. With the start of a newsletter, I feel a brief introduction to myself will help acquaint everyone involved in 4-H with a little history and some goals I have for our wonderful program.
Having been raised on a small horse farm in New Mexico, I naturally was involved in 4-H as a youth which eventually lead me to Animal Science studies at New Mexico State University. As an undergraduate, I participated in NMSU’s collegiate 4-H program, acted as their secretary and eventually represented New Mexico as a Swiss Ambassador through the International 4-H Youth Exchange (I.F.Y.E.). My studies with NMSU lead me to a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a Master of Arts in Agricultural Extension Education.
While attending NMSU, I worked with the Agronomy and Horticulture as a cotton genetics lab assistant and summer-breaks for a garden center. I am a firm believer in volunteer efforts and was a proud 200+ hour docent with the El Paso Zoo where I wrote reports, developed the sea lion presentation and modified/instructed 1st and 2nd-grade zoo camp. Upon completion of my degrees, I taught public school in Texas as a First-grade Teacher and most recently a high school Horticulture Teacher. I am certified in Agriculture in both Texas and New Mexico and have instructed ethnically diverse audiences as well as special needs students. Education is a passion of mine and I hope to instill a love of learning in all youth and volunteers involved in our program.
Training the youth of today to become leaders of tomorrow is an important task all of us carry on a daily basis. I look forward to working with many of you in future youth development opportunities. I am branching our club opportunities into the military, special needs and underserved youth in our community. I am currently involved with Kitsap Cares about Kids, It’s Time for Kitsap Kids and a hopeful candidate for the Leadership Kitsap 2007/2008 class. Immersing myself into Kitsap County is of utmost importance so as to better understand the current needs facing our youth. I thank you for your constant commitment to youth and our great 4-H program. I look forward to meeting each of you in the near future.

4-H License Plate Mobile is on the Move
--Pat BoyEs
I am delighted to report that the 4-H License Plate Mobile is on the move! We have received 1054 signatures and have moved the 4-H Mobile to Davenport! We are gaining momentum! The Lincoln County team, 4-H volunteer Joy Wilken, 4-H member Bethany Cobb and County Director Bridgett Rohner, are receiving their $100 check for being the first county to secure 100 signatures! I am very proud to report that a $100 check is making its way to Klickitat County who has just secured their 100 signatures!
Just to remind everyone how very important this effort is to our 4-H system, the funds generated from a successful license plate campaign will be able to support our 4-H system across Washington in grants directly to counties for their special projects, 4-H activities, publications and events. The infusion of these funds will allow us to create the truly world-class 4-H program our young people deserve.
4-H License plate information and forms can be found at:
http://4-h.wsu.edu/foundation/licenseplate.htm. Please direct your questions to Tony Dell at adell@wsu.edu. All signatures are due by September 1, 2007!
Kitsap County License Plate Signature Sheets are currently circulating meetings throughout the county. If interested, please contact Kelly Fisk, 337-7162 to sign your name in support of this effort.
July 1st Deadline for National Congress Applications
--Jan Klein
National Congress is a pinnacle of the 4-H experience for many 4-H members. The Congress provides youth, ages 14-19, a once-in-a-lifetime educational and cross cultural experience at the national level. The program combines plenary session, seminars, discussion groups and a service learning experience. Outstanding national community leaders, speakers and educators present the most current and timely information available. The event is held in Atlanta, Georgia, November 23-27.
For state applications go to http://4h.wsu.edu/kidstuff/opp_app.dot. Applications are due July 1 to Jan Klein at WSUE Spokane Academic Center, Suite 425, PO 1495, Spokane, WA 99210-1495.
Science, Engineering & Technology
Did you know that a mere 18% of high school student are proficient in science? (NAEP 2000) Even more, only 5% of collegiate students earn degrees in science and engineering? (Rising Above the Gathering Storm 2006)
4-H SET is a way of meeting the needs of tomorrow’s leaders in the above three critical areas
4-H plans to prepare 1 million new young people in improved science literacy, undergraduate degree’s in these three areas and career choices related to these fields.
