Is a Home Embroidery Machine for You?

Home embroidery machines that produce professional-looking embroidery designs have been on the market for almost twenty years. They continue to capture a significant share of new sewing machine sales. Two machine formats are available to the home sewer: the stand-alone embroidery machine which does only machine embroidery, and the sewing/embroidery machine combination that can convert from a regular sewing machine to an embroidery machine. Most sewing machine manufacturers have at least two embroidery machine models in their product line.As with most major purchases, there are pros and cons to purchasing an embroidery machine. The pros include the following points:

On the otherhand, the machines, software, and embroidery supplies are expensive. Embroidery machines start in the $2000 range and can go over $7000. Most embroidery machines are limited in the design size that can be created, and the 'design language' that a particular brand of machine will recognize. Supplemental software used to download designs from the Internet, resize designs, or create your own designs can add another $500-$2000. Specialty threads, needles, and stabilizers (backing materials to keep fabric stable while the machine is creating the embroidery) are also necessary to do embroidery. The machine embroiderer should have basic knowledge of computer technology. If you are interested in embroidery machines, check with any of the local sewing machine dealers for more information or demonstration.
