Scissors and Shears
Tools make a big impact in learning any skill,
and sewing is no different. Sharp scissors and shears are essential
tools for any sewer.
To keep them sharp, avoid dropping them or using them on heavy
paper or cardboard. Shears are designed for cutting out fabric,
and have bent handles to allow the fabric to remain flat on
the table, resulting in more accurate cutting. The most common
lengths are 7" and 8".
Smaller scissors with two sharp points, are indispensable for
trimming, clipping threads, and other general cutting. The best
lengths for these scissors is 4" or 5".
Cutting surfaces should be large enough to accommodate the fabric
being cut, usually a minimum of 30" wide and 48" long,
and at a height that is comfortable for the person doing the
cutting.
