Care of Wedding Dresses

Wedding season is traditionally in June, but weddings occur throughout the year. Knowing how to store the bride's wedding finery after the big day can be a confusing task.

All wedding dresses should be cleaned no later than two weeks after the wedding, whether dirt is visible or not. Many 'invisible' stains, such as from sodas or alcoholic beverages dry clear, but turn brown over time. Perspiration stains and body oils turn yellow with age and permanently damage fabric. Follow the cleaning recommendations.

Once the gown is cleaned, it should be stored in acid-free tissue and in an acid-free storage box. Plastic bags are not recommended because as the plastic ages, it emits gases that can damage fabric that it is designed to protect.
