Many area wildlife species have specific habitat needs. With changed land uses, needs for food and shelter for some wildlife are being met. Learn about cavity nesting species and you can become a backyard wildlife steward.

Nesting Boxes are Important & Fun

You might not realize that there are nearly 60 animal species in Kitsap County that need cavities for nests and shelter. Dead standing trees or snags are typically used by cavity nesting wildlife. In most rural residential areas the dead standing trees or snags, have been cut down for safety reasons thus eliminating critical habitat for cavity nesters. Nesting boxes in the form of bird houses and bat houses can be designed and placed to provide the necessary habitat for song birds and other wildlife. If you would enjoy seeing more wildlife consider using nesting boxes in your back yard and throughout your neighborhood.
