General Overview of the WSU Master Gardener Volunteer Program in Kitsap County
Two hundred volunteers comprise the WSU Kitsap County Extension Master Gardener Program. Kitsap County's Master Gardeners provide support through their volunteer time in the following ways:
Insect and Plant Diagnostic Clinics:
Volunteers spend time answering questions about plant problems and IPM (Integrated Pest Management). They are also asked to identify weeds, insects, and plants. A knowledge of other WSU Extension Programs is required because the public will often ask those questions too.
Clinics operate from April through October except for the Extension Office Clinic which is staffed by Master Gardeners Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week all year long. Some Master Gardeners also put in time answering calls sent to their homes from the Extension Office. In 2003, the Master Gardener program saw the start of a clinic held once each month on the Trident Subase staffed by Master Gardeners who were either on active duty or retired from the military.
There are eleven diagnostic clinics located at: 1) Port Orchard Farmers Market; 2) Port Orchard Nursery; 3) Port Orchard Fred Meyer; 4) Wal-Mart in Bremerton; 5) Lowe's in Bremerton; 6) Home Depot in Silverdale; 7) Poulsbo Farmer's Market; 8) Kingston Farmer's Market; 9) Ace Hardware Bainbridge Island; 10) Anna Smith Garden in Bremerton; and 11) Kitsap County Extension Office, 345 6th Street, Ste. 550, Bremerton.
Temporary clinics are also staffed in March (at both the Soroptomists Garden Show in North Kitsap and the Homebuilders Home and Garden Show at the Fairgrounds). During the Kitsap County Fair Master Gardeners are on duty from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily during the run of the fair.
Public Speaking/Teaching/Learning Opportunities:
Volunteers are also needed at Guillemot Cove in Seabeck and all during the Kitsap County Fair in the Horticulture Displays Area in Presidents Hall. A Master Gardener serves as Fair Horticulture Superintendent. MG Volunteers take in the vegetables, fruits and plants and perform duties such as decorating the area, displaying the fruit and answering fair entrants questions. The also serve as judges in awarding ribbons.
WSU Master Gardener Volunteers in Kitsap County also serve as partners in a myriad of ecological projects with groups such as: Stillwaters, Stream Team, Sea Grant, SWWM, Kitsap County Public Works, PUD, Kitsap Conservation District Native Plant Salvage Program, Master Composters, Master Weed Advisors, BUGS (Bremerton Urban Garden Society); numerous grade schools, junior high schools and high schools.
WSU Master Gardeners serve in advisory capacities and also offer consultations and classes at subsidized housing areas such as: Austerbruin in Poulsbo, Matan's/Anderson Cove in Bremerton and Westpark Housing.
Many WSU Master Gardeners give talks and classes at garden clubs, parent/teacher groups, civic, church and community groups and are also involved in outreach activities with senior citizens.
Fundraising, Marketing, Technical Support, Media, and other duties as requested:
