Horticulture Education

What is Master Gardener Education?

In Kitsap County the Master Gardener Educational program consists of an annual 12 week course that begins in January. It is held every Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Master Gardener core curriculum includes lectures in basic botany, horticulture, soil science, sustainable garden management, integrated pest management, plant health care, pesticide safety, entomology, insect pest management, plant pathology, plant disease diagnosis and control, weed identification, tree fruit and small fruit production.

In Kitsap County there is a sign up list to join the Master Gardener program. Approximately fifty students are selected after an interview process from the pool of interested people who submit applications to the program.

Master Gardener Certification

There is a $225 charge for Master Gardener education and potential Master Gardeners obligate themselves to 50 hours of payback time to the program. Scholarships and payment options are available upon request.

After completing the training and scoring well on the chapter tests, Master Gardener interns are scheduled to staff plant problem diagnostic clinics and work in one or more of the educational gardens.

Once certified Master Gardeners complete their volunteer payback obligation to the program they are encouraged to remain in the program after their first year to continue their education and participate in the many activities offered in Kitsap County.
