Junior Chef
Jr. Chef consists of two 8-week series of 60 minute classroom sessions. This series teaches students healthy lifestyle choices and food preparation skills, if desired. Each lesson contains hands-on activities that help students integrate the nutrition knowledge they gain. In addition, a cooking session utilizing 5 to 6 "Jr. Chefs" of the day prepare a food related to the nutrition theme of the day. By the end of the series students will be able to:
- Give examples of the relationship between nutrients in food and health.
- Demonstrate proper handwashing and food safety skills to prevent foodborne illness.
- Demonstrate basic food preparation skills.
- Set goals for healthy eating and being more physically active.
Lessons include a Jr. Chef cookbook, activity sheets, parent newsletter and visual aides. Each lesson can be done with or without the cooking segment.
All lessons integrate health, fitness, math, science, language arts and other EALRs and are taught by a WSU-trained Nutrition Educator or Dietitian.
