Shore Stewards
Everyone can become a Shore Steward. The following information describes several ways in which you can become a Shore Steward in Kitsap County.
The Shore Stewards Program was created as part of the WSU Extension Beachwatchers Program which began in Island County on Whidbey Island. There are two categories for participation in Shore Stewards education and volunteering in Kitsap County: the Shore Stewards Workshop and Native Plant and Shoreline Stewardship Advisor Program.
Each individual person in Kitsap County who lives in a house or owns property along the shoreline can participate in or benefit from these programs. To become a Shore Steward and receive a certificate plus a sign to display on your property, you will attend a one to three hour workshop about shoreline processes and least toxic methods. Then you'll sign a pledge saying you'll do your part to enhance and preserve your own portion of our Kitsap County shoreline.
If you'd like to become an advocate and resource for those in our community who'd like to learn more about native plants; enhancing, restoring and preserving our shorelines and riparian areas; plus provide education, advice and resources for those seeking shoreline education, then you can attend and learn in a 72 hour course held over ten to twelve weeks each year. Volunteers who complete the course become Native Plant and Shoreline Stewardship Advisors who volunteer in their communities at educational events and by appointment.
